Baby Announcement
I wish that I had been able to have my child at this point in time; as mothers of today have a lot of advantages which were not available 20 years ago.
Cell phones were non-existent.
...Now families and friends can be informed that the birth of the baby is imminent while the expectant parents are in the car on the way to the hospital.
Ultra-sounds were only given with insurance company prior approval for high-risk pregnancies.
...Now many women have ultra-sounds every other month. The pictures are clearer; and there is even a video tape of the ultra sound they may have.
It was a total surprise until the birth what sex of child you would have…boy or girl.
…Parents can now ascertain the sex of the child, and give the child a name prior to birth.
Then, plastic bags came in sandwich size or gallon size.
...Now, for convenience, plastic bags which are re-sealable come in many sizes. If a mother has a smaller sandwich, or one cookie, a bag can be used that is suitable. Many bags come decorated.
Diapers were sold in boxes of about 3 feet by 3 feet square.
...the same amount of diapers at present is compressed into a space of a small shoebox or less.
Birth announcements were picked up at the local card store and sent out by US Postal Mail; which took anywhere from a week to 10 days to arrive.
...Now, birth announcements such as the beautiful, custom work of art (see above) are the norm, sent out by email which can reach the recipient in seconds.
Pictures were taken with a 210 camera. Resolution & quality were poor. Film and separately purchased flashes were costly. Flashes oftentimes did not work. After completing all 12 or 24 pictures, the film (if not exposed when removing from the camera) was taken to the local retail store to be developed at their lab. If the film and pictures were not lost, you would receive the pictures back within 2 weeks. By that time, you had forgotten what the pictures were that you had taken. That is if you remembered to take the film in to the store at all...
...All pictures can be captured on a minute digital card which can store up to 500 or more pictures, batteries are smaller than 1 inch and can be re-charged; and automated flash is built in to the digital camera. Video is built into the small 3 to 4-inch camera and an ability to "freeze" a frame of the video is a choice.
You were finally able to view your pictures, but if the picture was out of focus, or someone had accidentally taken a picture of the bottom half of the person, or caught a stray thumb...there was no do-over, no retakes. Good gosh, the event was already 2 weeks past.
...Now there are digital cameras, with extremely high quality/high resolution. The ability to review the picture immediately, retake the picture from different angles, and alter the camera settings is all available.
Computers did not exist to the general public. There was no world coverage public Internet available.
...Now pictures can be immediately downloaded to a computer wherein you can fax, email, or IM the picture anywhere, to anyone.
The only ability to save a picture was in a photo album or on the negative, which were often thrown away or, if retained, rotted with age and exposure
...Now there is an ability to save the pictures to a computer, CD, or other media.
Red eye, facial disfigurations, and other misc "junk" within a picture were tolerated. There was no way for the average person to fix these problems.
...At present, the ability to alter a picture in any way you wish is available via computer digital programs.
So, since I was unable to "announce" my child's birth at the time. I am taking the opportunity to do it now in this beautiful way for my beautiful baby!
